Low-Carb McDonald's: What to Order
McDonald's is surprisingly workable when you stop treating the bun, fries and sugary drink as compulsory. The easy move is a beef burger without the bun or ketchup — or a McMuffin without the muffin at breakfast.

Order
“Double Cheeseburger, no bun and no ketchup, please.” Keep the cheese, pickle, onion and mustard. Add a side salad or zero-sugar drink if wanted.
Low Carb Life · verify today's menu and your customisation before eating.
Watch
Ketchup is 6g per pot and Big Mac Sauce 3.8g. The side salad is 3.8g as currently served, including its crispy onions.
Avoid
Buns, fries, hash browns, breaded chicken, wraps, milkshakes and regular sugary drinks. A sweet dip can add 10–17g on its own.
The 30-second order
If I wanted the least awkward, genuinely satisfying order, I would choose a Double Cheeseburger with no bun and no ketchup. McDonald's calculator puts the retained burger, cheese, pickle, onion and mustard at 2.5g carbs and 23g protein. That is enough food to feel like lunch rather than a collection of compromises.
- Choose beef: the plain burger range is much easier to customise than the breaded chicken range.
- Remove the bread: say “no bun” clearly.McDonald's UK explicitly confirmsbunless burgers can be requested.
- Remove ketchup: keep mustard, pickle and onion unless you dislike them. The ketchup is easy carbohydrate with little payoff.
- Skip the meal upgrade: do not replace the bun with fries. Choose a side salad, water, black coffee or a zero-sugar drink.
- Check the handover: special requests are still special requests. Open the box and confirm the bun and ketchup were removed.
Bunless burgers
This is where McDonald's earns its place in a low-carb eating-out plan. Removing the bun changes a standard Big Mac from 41g carbs to 4.6g; choosing a plainer burger and dropping ketchup takes you lower still.

Breakfast without the muffin
The same trick works in the morning: ask for the McMuffin filling without the English muffin. You keep the egg, cheese and bacon or sausage, and avoid roughly 25g of the standard item's carbohydrate. Do not undo the swap with a hash brown.

Sides and drinks
The menu's weakest point is the lack of a substantial unbreaded chicken or salad meal. The current side salad is useful next to a bunless burger, but it is not lunch by itself. Drinks are simpler: black coffee, water or a clearly labelled zero-sugar option.

Sauces: the quiet carb creep
A creamy dip can fit. A sweet dip can contain more carbohydrate than the entire customised burger. Ranch and garlic mayo are the easier choices; sweet chilli, BBQ, curry and sweet-and-sour need deliberate budgeting.

The menu traps
Chicken sounds like the virtuous choice, but the current McDonald's UK chicken range is breaded. Nuggets, McCrispy and crispy wraps all land well above a customised beef burger. The obvious starches and sweet drinks climb faster still.

FAQ
Can I order a bunless burger at McDonald's UK?
Yes. McDonald's UK says you can ask the server for a bunless burger and that special requests are accommodated wherever possible. Ask clearly for no bun, then confirm any sauce removal you want as a separate request.
What is the best low-carb order at McDonald's UK?
A Double Cheeseburger without the bun or ketchup is a practical default: the official calculator gives 2.5g carbohydrate, 23g protein and 300 kcal for the retained components. If you want a larger meal, the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese prepared the same way is 2.7g carbohydrate and 45g protein.
Is a Big Mac without the bun low carb?
Yes. With the bun removed but the Big Mac sauce retained, McDonald's current UK calculator gives 4.6g carbohydrate, 21g protein and 310 kcal. That is dramatically lower than the standard Big Mac at 41g carbohydrate, but the sauce means it is not the very lowest-carb burger build.
What can I order for a low-carb breakfast?
Ask for a McMuffin without the English muffin. Current official-calculator totals range from 1.9g carbohydrate for Egg & Cheese to 3.1g for Double Sausage & Egg. Skip the hash brown, pancakes and syrup.
Are McDonald's chicken items low carb?
Not the current breaded lines in this guide. Six Chicken McNuggets contain 21g carbohydrate before dip, while the McCrispy and Crispy Sweet Chilli Chicken Wrap each contain 53g. The current UK menu does not list the grilled-chicken salad recommended by some older guides.
Does removing the bun make the meal gluten-free?
No. McDonald's says its kitchens handle allergens and use shared equipment and utensils, so it cannot guarantee a meal is allergen-free even after an ingredient is removed. Bunless is a carbohydrate customisation, not an allergy-safe claim.
How current are these figures?
The values were checked against McDonald's official UK item data and nutrition calculator on 18 July 2026. Products, recipes and available customisations change, so use the current McDonald's menu and allergen information if precise carb counting is medically important.
